What You Need to Know about ESR Test?


An ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate) test is a blood test that is conducted to determine how quickly the red blood cells fall to the bottom of the test tube. This test is usually recommended by the doctor if they suspect high inflammation levels in the human body.

Why is an ESR Test Conducted?

Often, it is used to diagnose certain medical conditions such as:

  • Arthritis
  • Cancer
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Lupus
  • Systemic vasculitis  

The test is also suggested to check the progress of inflammatory diseases.

When does a Doctor Recommend an ESR Test?

If an individual has visible symptoms that indicate an inflammatory disease, then the doctor recommends this test. Some of the common symptoms include:

  • Headaches
  • Joint stiffness
  • Swollen joints
  • Pain in joints, neck, pelvis, and shoulders
  • Loss of appetite
  • Unintentional weight loss

Preparation for the ESR Test

If an individual needs to undergo an ESR test then they do not need any special preparation. It is important to disclose any current medication to the doctor that the person is taking. Certain medications may hinder the test results so, asking the doctor whether to continue it or not is crucial. 

A phlebotomist takes the blood sample directly from the vein and stores it in the container. Usually, there is no side effect of the ESR test. However, some individuals may feel slight dizziness after the blood is drawn.

Understanding Test Results

The normal range of ESR test in men is ≤15 mm/hr, and in women, it is ≤ 20 mm/hr. Keep in mind that the reference ranges of the ESR test may vary from one laboratory to another. So, do check the reference range mentioned on the test report. 

Many factors can affect the ESR level in the blood including infection in the body, blood disorder, kidney failure, and cancer and heart condition.
