Types of Iron Tests: Understanding an Iron Profile Test
Iron is vital for making haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells responsible for oxygen delivery. However, too much or too little iron can impact the overall health. Instead of a single blood test, the doctor is more likely to recommend an iron profile test, which combines several tests, providing a complete view of iron’s status in the body. Serum Iron
Test
The serum iron test measures the amount of iron in your blood at the time of
the sample. Since levels of iron in the body can change during the day and
after eating a meal, this iron test cannot diagnose iron
deficiency on its own. It is interpreted with other iron
markers, for a more accurate diagnosis.
Ferritin Test
The ferritin test
measures ferritin, a protein that stores iron in the body. The ferritin test is one of the most accurate ways of measuring the
body’s iron reserves, with low levels usually indicating the depletion of iron even
before the patient shows symptoms of anaemia. However, it can be increased with
inflammation, infection or liver damage; therefore, it needs to be evaluated
along with the other iron values.
Total Iron-Binding Capacity (TIBC)
The total
iron-binding capacity (TIBC) test measures blood’s ability to bind with iron
with transferrin, the protein that is responsible for transporting iron in your
blood. TIBC most often increases when there is iron deficiency and decreases in
iron overload disorders.
Transferrin Test
The transferrin test
measures the level of transferrin, the main protein which carries iron around
the body. Changes in transferrin concentrations indicate how the body's iron is
being transferred to various tissues.
An Iron Profile Test offers a comprehensive evaluation of the body’s iron status by combining multiple tests that assess iron storage, transport, and utilisation. Since each test provides different clinical information, the results are interpreted together to accurately diagnose iron deficiency, iron overload, and other iron-related disorders.
